Catherine Nkoutche received the 2026 - 2027 TEX-E Fellowship. Read further to learn more about her motivation for research and her advice to current graduate students.

What motivates you about your research?
What motivates me most about my research is the opportunity to explore problems that truly matter and to better understand how complex systems work. My work focuses on modeling and optimization to improve the resilience and sustainability of energy and manufacturing supply chains. In today’s world where geopolitical tensions and unexpected disruptions can quickly impact operations I find it meaningful to study how these systems can be designed to be more robust and adaptable. I’m especially driven by the idea that even small improvements in how we design and operate supply chains can help organizations remain cost competitive while also contributing to more sustainable practices. Knowing that my work could support better decision-making in such critical industries is both exciting and humbling.
What is your favorite aspect of the Ph.D. experience so far?
One of the aspects I value most about the Ph.D. experience is the freedom to explore ideas creatively. It’s a unique environment where I can test different approaches, ask questions, and learn through both success and failure. Compared to industry settings, where decisions often require multiple layers of approval, academia offers more flexibility to experiment and think independently. At the same time, I appreciate the collaborative nature of research, where exchanging ideas with peers and mentors helps shape and improve my work. That balance between independence and collaboration has been especially rewarding.
What advice do you have for current graduate students?
I would encourage graduate students to trust their curiosity and not hesitate to pursue ideas they believe could make a difference. It’s important to test your ideas, share your perspectives, and remain open to learning from others. Not every experiment or approach will lead to immediate results, but each effort contributes to your growth and to the broader body of knowledge. Even setbacks are valuable, they often provide insights that guide future work. Staying patient, consistent, and open-minded can make a significant difference in the journey.
What excites you most about TEX-E?
Being part of TEX-E is a meaningful opportunity for me to expand my understanding of the energy sector beyond the classroom. I’m excited to engage with leaders in the industry, learn from their experiences, and be part of conversations shaping the future of energy. It’s also inspiring to connect with peers who share a similar interest in energy and sustainability. I’m looking forward to learning from others, contributing where I can, and growing within this community.
